Every CA county is listed. Records marked verified have an address and booking line confirmed against a published sheriff or corrections directory; unverified counties link to the sheriff's office lookup. Always confirm hours, visitation, and bond acceptance with the facility.
How bail works in California
- 1. Booking. The arrested person is processed at a CA county jail — fingerprints, mugshot, charge intake.
- 2. Bail amount. A judge or the county's standard bail schedule sets the number, and timing depends on the court and the charge.
- 3. Pay the premium. A licensed CA bondsman posts the full bond in exchange for a non-refundable premium — up to state cap of the bond amount.
- 4. Release. Once posted, jail staff process release — often within a few hours, though the timing can vary by facility, staffing, and court schedule.
- 5. Court appearances. Every scheduled date must be kept, or the bond is forfeited and a warrant issues.
Release options in California
Commercial surety bail is generally available here
California licenses bail bond agents, so a commercial surety bond is typically an option — though eligibility, premium rates, collateral, and fees vary by court, charge, and agency.
Other release options that may apply
- Release on personal recognizance or an unsecured written promise to appear, at the court's discretion
- Cash or percentage deposit paid directly to the court clerk or the jail, where the court allows it
- Court-supervised or pretrial-services release, sometimes with conditions such as check-ins or monitoring
- Citation release at the scene or from booking for some lower-level charges

You don't have to be physically at the jail to help. These are the official third-party vendors most US jails and courts use. Always confirm the accepted vendor with the specific facility before you send money.
- GTL / ViaPath (ConnectNetwork) ↗
Most-used jail deposit vendor. Post bail, add to commissary, or fund calls from any state with a debit/credit card.
- Access Corrections ↗
Secure deposits and (in participating counties) bail payments. Search by facility.
- JailATM ↗
Deposits and bail at hundreds of county jails. Card fees apply per transaction.
- TouchPay (GTL / ViaPath) ↗
Deposit money and post bond to enrolled facilities by phone or web from anywhere.
- MoneyGram / Western Union ↗
Many county courts publish a MoneyGram receive code so out-of-state family can wire cash bail to the court clerk.
Tip: call the jail's booking or bond line first. Ask (1) is the person actually booked in and (2) what payment vendor and payment types they accept for bond. Verify the exact facility name on the vendor site before paying — some counties use multiple facilities.
California bail bonds — FAQ
›How fast can a bondsman get someone out of jail in California?
Once the bond is posted, release from a California county jail typically takes 2–8 hours depending on booking backlog and the facility.
›What does a bail bond cost in California?
California bondsmen charge a non-refundable premium — a percentage of the total bond, capped by state law. Some agencies offer payment plans.
›Do I need collateral for a bail bond in California?
Collateral requirements vary by bond size, charge, and the defendant's ties to California. Smaller bonds are often written on the signature of a co-signer alone.
›What happens if the defendant misses court in California?
A missed court date in California triggers a bench warrant and bond forfeiture. The co-signer becomes liable for the full bond amount unless the defendant is quickly surrendered.
